One of the casualties of the latest Akron Public Schools budget cuts was middle school sports. That means middle school basketball, soccer wrestling and track programs will be shut down, as the district tries to wipe out a $22-million budget deficit.

APS Athletic Director Joe Howard says he could anticipate these cuts as a possibility more than a year ago and started planning for them. He tells AkronNewsNow " We're working with the city of Akron and the YMCA to get our student-athletes in the programs that they have. The city of Akron has recreation basketball, and the season goes longer than our season does. There are softball leagues out there, there are soccer leagues out there."

Howard says the hardest hit sports will be wrestling and track. " No real replacements. I know two of our high school coaches are putting together club wrestling programs to help absorb some of those students," says Howard.

Football won't be affected because the district's middle schools don't field football teams. Student-athletes prepare for high school in pee-wee football and other club leagues.

He's hoping that club sports will fill the gap since the district can no longer field middle school teams.

Howard says the worst aspect of losing middle school sports is the regret that student-athletes have for not being able to play for their school.

If you thought prices at the pump seemed lower lately-- you were right.

Average retail gas prices in Akron dipped 10.1 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.56 a gallon as of Sunday.

The national average dropped 3.3 cents a gallon last week according to AkronGasPrices.com.

"While gasoline prices east of the Rockies have been falling, the West Coast remains at the mercy of refinery production," said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan in a press release.

As the Memorial Day weekend inches closer, DeHann says motorists on the West Coast are watching and waiting to see how much they'll pay to fill up.

"The entire West Coast right now is looking for any reason for a continuation in the price rally we've seen in the last week as supply remains tight, and stakes high as Memorial Day weekend is just two weeks away. While pump prices may continue their decline outside the West Coast, any refinery blip certainly has the potential for localized hotspots, and motorists should be aware of that," DeHaan said.

AUDIO Teen Pot Use Up

 A recent study...

It appears that Summit County teens are falling in line with an unfortunate national trend toward more marijuana use.

A recent study suggests that the number of teens who report heavy use of marijuana is up 80% over the last few year, 10% of teens get high at least 20 times per month and only 51% think that using pot poses a "great risk."

Locally, Summit County Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services Board Clinical Services Director John Ellis isn't pleased with the latest statistics, but says he's not surprised because they basically mirror what's happening in Summit County.

"Just by looking at last year's treatment statistics, marijuana was the drug of choice by a 10:1 ratio in our treatment facilities over the next nearest drug and that would be alcohol," said Ellis.

Ellis says there are considerable variables that are feeding that tendency for kids to use more weed: First, it's accessible. No fake ID's are necessary and nearly every teen either knows or knows of someone who knows a source that would allow them to buy marijuana without going to very much trouble. Second, Ellis says parents aren't talking about marijuana in the same way as in the past. He says today's parents are more accepting that their kids might smoke pot.

Tomko is accused of treating and operating on animals at the now-closed C&D Animal Hospital in Akron.

Both Bob McGee and Kenny Reymann were in the courtroom during the hearing and tell the news organization it was difficult for them to be in the same room with the woman who they say had a hand in their pets' demise.
According to the Canton Repository, both 23-year old Brent Amos and 22-year old Delbert Turner Jr of Akron had allegedly burglarized a home on Bebington Street NW.

Patrols in the township were intensified in the neighborhoods where homes were broken into and residents gave the police vehicle descriptions and information on the suspects.

Wednesday afternoon police located one of the men based on the descriptions given by neighbors in the area and found the second suspect after conducting a sweep of the area.

Both are facing burglary and criminal damaging charges for the incident on Bebington Street, but could be facing additional charges pending the Grand Jury.

Police say the pair targeted money and jewelry.
